I would like to recommend David at TGM Audio Mastering for his excellent treatment and timely response on two pieces of... music (so far!) that I've needed mixing and/or mastering. Having purchased David's book about DIY mastering, I was already aware of his abilities as a mixing and mastering engineer, but to hear the results of his work on my music was even better. My advice is to let Dave take care of both your mixing AND your mastering - with some good-quality stems, he'll get the best out of your playing and will offer some revisions too if you're not completely satisfied. All in all, I would recommend.read more

After spending three years writing and producing my first album I was faced with the problem of getting it mastered. I... have never done anything like this before and had no idea where to start. It’s fair to say that at first it was not a rewarding experience, as many of the studios I identified to do the work either charged a mint or in most cases, just didn’t respond to my enquiry. I hate flakes and the music industry seems to have more than its fair share. When I finally stumbled across TGM audio and its owner Dave Ely, things took a distinct turn for the better. Dave is a really top guy, down to earth and very knowledgeable. He didn’t patronise or judge me (as others had) but just asked a lot of clever and informed questions about my music and what I was trying to achieve. I then sent him the songs and he very quickly mastered one of them and sent it back to me to critique. I was astounded by the result but had a few reservations, which Dave addressed very quickly and sent an alternate version. As it transpired, his original attempt was pretty much bang on the money. He then proceeded to master ten songs in total and after a couple of tweaks, made my album come to life in a way I never thought was possible. I can’t recommend TGM Audio and Dave Ely highly enough. He really knows his craft, understands music, meets deadlines and is just a very nice guy to deal with. What’s more, his services are very competitively priced.read more

Pure Class A Tube Processors & The Best Software Money Can Buy...

Manley EQ

Nothing can handle the mids like the famous Manley Massive Passive Analogue EQ. It’s not surprising this comes with a price tag as heavy as the thing weighs. This is the ‘go to’ tool for giving new, vibrant life to the main elements across the mid-range of a mix.

Avalon EQ/Comp

The tightest lows and sparkliest highs I’ve ever heard. The Avalon 747 SP has many uses. The comp is very nice and smooth (when you get to know it). But be careful, it can bite you hard! The built in side chain is where this unit really shines. The EQ is straight forward, in a good way. Unbelievably tight in the lows, the silkiest highs and the mids are brilliantly detailed.

Pendulum Comp

One of the best loved high end compressors of all (a favourite amongst the top mastering engineers) the Pendulum OCL-2 can demonstrate incredible versatility for an opto compressor. From fast and aggressive, to slow and smooth, this unit can handle everything in between. This unit is used almost all of the time in one way or another.

Digital Processors

As well as using some of the nicest analogue audio mastering gear available, I also carry out a portion of the audio mastering process in the digital domain. For this I use only the nicest software money can buy; Universal Audio, Sonnox, Waves, Steinberg, Voxengo, PSP etc. Every mastering project is different, I choose the tools to suite the job, analogue, digital or both.

Prism Sound Converters

What’s the point in having superb analogue equipment if you can’t accurately capture the incredible detail it provides. The Prism Sound Orpheus is a well known top range converter amongst serious engineers. I’ve tried and tested other converters but after hearing this, I’ll not be changing them any time soon.

PMC Monitoring

A popular choice amongst serious mastering engineers. The PMC IB1a’s may be flattering but my goodness are they detailed. The perfect combination for long hours of critical listening. Here’s their spec: PMC ATL™ (Advanced Transmission Line) with 2 sections. 27mm Twin chamber fabric soft dome HF with high performance ferro-fluid cooling. 75mm Soft dome mid range in isolated enclosure. PMC 10” / 250mm carbon fibre & Nomex™ piston driver. Phenomenal bass response down to 25Hz.

Bryston Amps

Complimenting the PMC’s are two Bryston PowerPac 300 Mono Amplifiers. Superior quality, modular, single-channel power amplifiers delivering 300 watts at 8 Ohms. The PowerPac 300 is essentially a monaural version of the very popular 4B SST stereo amplifier.

Acoustics

Your monitors are only as good as your room's acoustics. Ask any experienced engineer and they’ll tell you the most important thing to ‘get right’ is the space in which you are working. TGM Audio Mastering is acoustically treated and calibrated to ensure accurate listening across the spectrum.

About TGM Audio Mastering

What is Audio Mastering?

Audio mastering is widely considered to be the most crucial stage in the production process. It is the final opportunity to enhance or repair problems within a mix. This important last step of the production should be carried out by someone who is experienced and is familiar with the problems that may occur. An audio mastering engineer will have fresh ears and can provide an objective approach to a mix. Skilful use of compression and EQ will ensure maximum cohesion and punchiness through out the whole album. Carried out in an acoustically treated room with ultra high definition speakers, an audio mastering engineer can spot things that may have slipped through the producers net. The combined skill, experience and world class audio mastering gear will ensure the final product will translate well to a wide variety of systems.

Why Get your audio mastered by TGM?

Having your audio mastered here will give it the power to stand out above the competition. I use some of the nicest analogue mastering gear available.

I’ll give your mix that extra sonic power and a polished sheen, gelling your whole mix together. Class A analogue tube compression and EQ will give your music a rich, warm sound and a tight bass that you just can’t get from even the nicest software plugins. My monitoring system enables me to understand how your music will translate to all other music playing systems, not all monitors can do this.

Stem Audio Mastering

In some cases, stem audio mastering will return more pleasing results than stereo audio mastering. Stem mastering is when a finished mix is separated in to individual parts (stems). You might have a drum stem, a guitar stem and a lead vocal stem. Providing the audio mastering engineer with stems allows for more control over the individual elements of the mix. To find out how to create stems for audio mastering, click the button below.

Please contact first for a quote (don’t be afraid, I’m quite reasonably priced).

Large files can be sent to me via a link to my DropBox which I will provide.

Mixing

Please contact for a quote (don’t be afraid, I’m quite reasonably priced).

Mix Review and Sample Master Service

I listen to your mix. If all’s good, I’ll provide you with a sample master. If I feel improvements can be made, I’ll provide a detailed review with suggestions to get the mix to where it needs to be.

Additional Mixes

This includes distribution versions, radio edits, instrumentals, a cappella etc.

Assuming each can be run off without major changes to settings within the master chain, these are charged at £10.00 each.

Revisions

If you require any revisions to made to a mastered audio file, I am happy to carry out a sensible number of revisions free of charge. If this is taken advantage of, I reserve the right to charge £15.00 per revision. If you require a revision, please try to provide adequate and understandable information; be precise about what you need changing (and what you want to remain the same).

How To Create Stems:

Decide on what tracks are to become stems – The drums may become stem one, the bass line stem two, the pads stem three, the lead vocal stem four etc. If you are unsure, simply upload the full mix and ask the audio mastering engineer to suggest what is best.

  • Line up the markers at either end of the track like you would normally when bouncing down a mix for standard mastering.
  • Ensure there is a few seconds gap of silence either end.
  • Mute every mixer channel except the channels that are to be the first stem.
  • Bounce the track to create the first stem – the drum stem for example.
  • Mute the channels you have just bounced then un-mute the channels that are to be the next stem.
  • Bounce the track to create the second stem – the bass line for example.
  • Carry out same process to create all the stems.
  • You will now have a number of audio files that when lined up together, will play your mix in sync.
  • Create a folder for all the files and compress using an audio friendly zip tool.
  • Upload zipped folder via the upload page.

Stem mastering is not the same as getting your track mixed. Although the master engineer may apply some mixing techniques where appropriate to achieve punch and clarity, this process is really meant for the tweaking of levels to arrive at a well balanced master. The track in question should have already been mixed with the intention of good separation and balance before the track is bounced in to stems.

Please also be aware that any master-bus compression applied at the mixing stages will likely behave differently without the full mix routed through it.
